SHIP expands Stanford’s teaching mission across Bay Area

From AI to infection control, Stanford Health Care Innovation Project projects showed how young innovators are already reimagining the future of care.

Stanford Health Care hosted the culminating event for the Stanford Health Care Innovation Project (SHIP) at the Li Ka Shing Center Green Lawn April 28, bringing together high school teams, SHC professionals, educators, and community partners for a day focused on health care innovation, mentorship, and workforce development.

Building on the momentum of last year’s innovation event with students from Turkey, SHIP expanded Stanford Health Care’s outreach efforts locally across the Bay Area through a structured, mentor-driven program designed around real-world healthcare challenges.

Over the course of several months, participating teams worked alongside SHC Biomedical Engineering mentors to research problems, develop prototype concepts, refine ideas, and ultimately present their solutions to a panel of judges consisting of clinicians, engineers, and operational leaders.

The event showcased projects focused on topics such as operating room efficiency, infection control technologies, sustainability in health care settings, artificial intelligence, wearable health monitoring, and telemedicine. The level of technical depth, creativity, and professionalism displayed throughout the showcase left a strong impression on attendees and partners alike.

“What made this program meaningful wasn’t simply the scale of participation or the innovation on display,” said Adam Alkhato, Sr. Director of Biomedical Engineering. “It was the reminder that health care transformation is ultimately a human investment long before it becomes a technological one.”

Alkhato emphasized that programs like SHIP reflect a broader responsibility for organizations operating at the intersection of health care and innovation.

“At Stanford Health Care Biomedical Engineering, we believe high-performing organizations have a responsibility beyond operational excellence,” he said. “They should help inspire future talent and create pathways for young minds to engage with real health care challenges.”


One of the defining aspects of SHIP was its mentorship model. Biomedical Engineering staff volunteered their time throughout the semester to guide teams through the design-thinking process, helping participants navigate technical questions, feasibility considerations, and real-world health care constraints.

For many mentors, the experience became just as impactful as it was for the participants.

“I had the pleasure of guiding and supporting two enthusiastic groups as they worked on their innovative projects,” said Jack Feng, Systems Engineer in Biomed. “Watching their ideas come to life and seeing their growth over the course of the project was incredibly fulfilling.”

The mentorship dynamic became especially visible during the final showcase, where many teams actively sought out their mentors following presentations and award announcements. Organizers viewed this as one of the strongest indicators of the program’s impact. 

Beyond the event itself, SHIP also highlighted the growing importance of collaboration between health care organizations, education systems, and workforce development initiatives.

“The importance of partnership is pivotal in empowering young individuals to realize their potential and transform their curiosity into meaningful contributions,” said Kevin Hunter, Sr. Manager of Talent Strategy and Programs.

“Initiatives such as SHIP and broader workforce development efforts emphasize the significance of mentorship, hands-on learning, and fostering a diverse group of future healthcare innovators.”

The event also attracted attention beyond Stanford Health Care, including local media coverage, participation from elected officials, and engagement from external partners interested in supporting future growth opportunities.

As discussions continue around the future of SHIP, leaders and partners are exploring opportunities to further expand the initiative, strengthen institutional support, and potentially connect programs like SHIP to future internship and workforce development pathways.

For Stanford Health Care Biomedical Engineering, the initiative represents more than a single event.

“Programs like SHIP are a reminder that innovation is not only about the technologies we support today,” Alkhato said, “but also about inspiring the people who will build what comes next.”
