The Data Science team focuses on ensuring Stanford Health Care is a leader in responsible artificial intelligence — from development and implementation to maintenance and optimization. We support Stanford Health Care’s long-term vision to harness artificial intelligence to support and enhance every aspect of health care delivery, AI research and medical education. We partner closely across clinical specialties and operational areas to deploy algorithms leading to better outcomes. Our work is organized into four work-streams:
- Advancing thought leadership for Responsible AI in Healthcare: The efforts in this workstream study the interplay of a model's output with the capacity to take follow up actions (including the benefit and harms that may result from such actions) to estimate the achievable impact. This research underpins how we do the FURM assessments. Other efforts here develop ways to conduct holistic evaluations of language models for medical tasks, via MedHELM
- Assessments: We do two kinds of assessments. The first, called FURM stands for Fair, Useful, Reliable Model assessments, which articulate the potential value of using a classifier or predicter (i.e. a model) to drive a specific clinical or operational workflow. The assessment quantifies whether a specific AI-guided workflow is likely to be sustainable. The output of the assessment is a report summarizing the eligible patient population, the workflow driven by the model, the anticipated business case, and ethical considerations. The reports help ensure responsible use of AI at Stanford Healthcare. Our team also helps in conduing technical feasibility assesstments to answer whether a given problem is amenable to an AI based solution.
- Building the platform and processes for an “AI ready” organization: In partnership with the Architecture and Integration team, we build and maintain a data science platform for TDS to develop, deploy, and monitor algorithms as well as GenAI solutions. We also design and support the use of the Responsible AI Life Cycle at Stanford Health Care, to oversee the incorporation of AI models in software applications supporting both clinical and operational work.
- Identifying and executing AI projects that support the operating plan: Based on focused explorations and needs finding, we identify and deploy three to five AI solutions per year that have high value for one or more pillars of Stanford Healthcare's annual operating plan.
The enterprise risk management program works to prevent and mitigate disruption of institutional strategies and operations due to dynamic global and sector threats.
